101 in 1001

The idea is that you set yourself 101 challenges to achieve in 1001 days...

It has taken me a few weeks to think of my 101 challenges. Some are big and important- like sorting out finances, some are fun- like holidays I want to take, some are just things I never quite get around to doing but my life would be better if I actually did them. Well, I'd feel it was better.

So here are my 101, in no particular order.

65 - 68 Travel, Murder & Mystery

I've been a bit rubbish trying to keep up with what I've read, so here's the worst reviews EVER on books 64-68.

64. Hunt for the Southern Continent

James Cook

Finally, one I know something about! I've read quite a few books on the southern oceans and explorers in general. This was a great little read- I suspect they've trimmed a lot of  "...at sea, more sea, bit windy..." stuff

65. Life on the Golden Horn

Mary Wortley Montagu

The most memorable section for me was this little aside to her sister:

"... but I believe I forgot to tell you one curiosity in all the German courts which I cannot forbear taking notice of. All the Princes keep favourite dwarfs."

66. Problem at Pollensa Bay

Agatha Christie

A collection of short stories, more mystery than murder. Pretty good.

67. The Listerdale Mystery

Agatha Christie

More short stories- with some Parker Pyne and some with Harley Quin, also pretty good.

68. Parker Pyne Investigates

Agatha Christie

More Parker Pyne short stories. Again pretty good.

101 Update -August 2011

So it's just been a while since I did one of these updates. I don't seem to be able to focus on the list at all but without really trying I'm getting there anyway.

7. Grow my own vegetables and get the kids to help- at least five different things

8. Get the girls to help prepare, cook and eat all of the different vegetables we grow

I grew Lettuce (four varieties) and we all ate it endlessly over the summer- next year I'll sow them a few weeks apart! Carrots, Beetroot and Spring Onions too. I'm counting the lettuce twice since I grew so many varieties. The girls helped to grow them, harvest them and cook with them. I'm absolutely hooked. Think we'll try for Strawberries, Potatos, Onions, Garlic and who knows what else.

14. Go camping with the family in Europe

This is DONE.

24. Get Minnie out of nappies at night time

We wanted to wait until after we had been camping this summer (we were going to be unable to do washing on that scale!) so once we were home it was out with the nappies and in with the pants at bedtime too. She's been doing great, much easier than the other girls- far fewer accidents. Just goes to show they are all so different- Minnie has been a nightmare during the day but a dream at night- the other two were the opposite! But this one is DONE, no going back now (woot woot no baby stuff in my life now!).

61. Clear the end of the garden, get some furniture and create an adult relaxing space

We changed our mind on this. We decided to move the sheds there instead and increase the size of the main garden. With the ever expanding veg patch it makes sense and the girls love the extra space too.

93. Let the girls have a sleepover

We've done this a few times now, it's just part of the girls' social life now. Totally, DONE!

06th_August

100. Drink hot chocolate on the beach watching the sunset with Christopher and the girls.

Strangely no photos of this one, but we nipped down to the beach before bed one night and managed to drink some hot chocolate before the one and only rain spell of the holiday started. Hurrah!

42. Give blood at least twice a year

I wanted to update this one- I mentioned here that I was told to go away for a year after two difficult donation sessions. I finally went back, and it was good. This one is back on! I'm so happy about this one more than most of the others- I have the eternally sought O- blood type and believe that if 20 minutes of my time can save a life then it's absolutely worth it.

18th_July

I still have 44 tasks to go, I'm not so sure I'll get to the end of my list! Perhaps I need some focus, but perhaps it's more that I need more time in my life.

Number 14

Number 14: Go Camping with the girls in Europe

This is Ireland.

This is our tent.

This one is DONE.

June 2011

No matter how hard I try I seem to have not enough time for all the things I used to do. That includes my 101 in 1001 list.

It's all about balance, and right now if balance means I don't tick things off, I'm okay with that. I like a deadline, it's totally fine I have ages and ages to go, right?

I have managed to tick a few of the things off though...

50. Let the girls have a pet and have them care for it. Convince Christopher this is a good idea.

What? We got a pet and didn't tell you? No, no we didn't. Instead we've become the pet sitting service to friends and family. We have mum's dogs on a semi regular basis- we had them for a good few weeks while she had her op and now we have them for odd days when she receives her treatment. The girls are a big part of taking care of the dogs- they feed them, walk them, scoop the poop and hug and cuddle them.

Add to the dogs we also rat-sit for Kateri and Tom. They have four rats (with their own blog!) and this is more work for the girls- in fact they have earned a badge each for their stellar Rat care.

What we've discovered through all of this pet care is that we realistically don't have the time and space in our lives for a pet right now. It is an extra stress on time and energy that we don't need. I'm happy that the girls have had the experience of caring for an animal (or six!). I'm calling this one DONE.

53. Buy proper wardrobes for Chris and I

In a rummage in the loft yesterday for a bookcase we were sure was in there we found a wardrobe that we forgot we had (it's a long story, not really worth sharing). We've lifted it down and Chris has the task of building it and arranging all of our clothes. I rekon that'll do for this one, especially as we don't know what our long term plans are- not spending a fortune on something that might not fit when we do our next rearrangment. DONE

54. Sort out the baby things in the attic- save, donate, repurpose.

Now that Callum and Selena are well over half way to the hopefully safe arrival of their baba (and my cousin Emma is hot on their heels) it was time to get up there and see what we had kept. I was sure there wasn't all that much- with a succession of girls everything kind of got used a lot. But there were several large bags of clothes and bedding. Chairs, swings, slings and who knows what. Add to that the toys (that I have left for now). Yeah, what they don't need they can give away. But I'm done with it. DONE

26th_May

Now I just need to wait for the BABY to arrive.

Only 55 of my 101 to go and I've got 18 months to do it... totally do-able right?

April 2011

I totally had plans to write and publish this by the end of the month. I really need to stop making plans because NONE of them seem to be happening at the moment. However, I think I'll be catching up on a few blog posts though since I'm now laid up with a chest infection. I wont be able to do much more than sleeping, sitting and some very light walking (just to avoid cabin fever). In the mean time here is how my 101 in 1001 challenge is going.

I'm chuffed to bits I got 5 things completed this month! Hurrah! Go Me!

15. Visit PAX Lodge (the GirlGuiding World Centre in London)

This was a totally inspiring trip, as much for the company I kept- I felt very priviliedged to spent a weekend with 6 inspiring fantastic women!

{Me, Emma, Kateri, Jo, Kirsten, Alison, Elizabeth}

68. Keep the car clean- inside and out.

This is finally under control. We have a whole strategy of stuff being removed from the car every day (except maybe today!). The rubbish is collected in a bag and spare bags are in the glove compartment. It's actually pretty simple, I have no idea why we haven't worked out this simple plan before, perhaps it's simply because we can now park in what I will loosely term "driveway" and it's easier to motivate myself to do it. Apparantly, it was 10 feet too far before.

71. Sell or Recycle all the old technology floating around the house.

Chris assures me this has been done. I didn't even ask him either. Double WIN. Actually, he's probably earning cash through selling stuff so that's a Triple WIN.

79. Get a family portrait taken.

The photographer at my brother's wedding took a portrait of Chris and I with the girls. All of us dressed with hair vaguely tidy and only some bruises and scabby knees. Added to this she also took a full family picture- something we have never managed to achieve before now- Mum, Nash, my brothers and I , all of out partners, my step sisters, the girls AND even my Auntie Ellen. It's a miracle.

not_the_portrait

{hopefuly it'll be better than this one}

82. Go caffeine free for a month.

Did you read how hard this was? Thank goodness it's done. I'd never have got through the last 2 weeks without caffeine.

That's not a bad haul or goals really, but I did even better than that- I even worked on a few extra bits and pieces this month to get some more things completed. Here are four that I'm really working towards  (well "working" is a loose term really!)

7. Grow my own vegetables and get the kids to help- at least five different things.

Last week I got around to planting out some of my vegetable seeds that the girls had sewn a few weeks earlier. I've got a good range- Lettuce, Spring Onions, Carrots, Parsnips and Beetroot to start with. I plan to try out some other things but it will have to wait until I am feeling a bit better, but for now they are growing well and my little greenfingered helpers are rather enjoying the process too.

14. Go camping with the family in Europe

Whe  I wrote this on the list I was thinking France, Belgium, Germany... but since we are going to Northern Ireland in the summer for a wedding I guess we should make it our holiday and head to Ireland and go camping, it's not the UK, it's in Europe. It totally counts. My list, my rules!

39. Go Swimming regularly until I can swim a mile without stopping.

For the Easter holidays we bought a family swim pass for the local pools (that's another post on it's own) and we went swimming pretty much everyday. Without too much building up to it I managed to swim half a mile. I was surprised that I could get so far so fast. I didn't feel that I was at my limit at the time either. So, once I've recovered from my current chest infection we will buy another pass and get back to swimming every night. I know I'll enjoy it and three girls adored it! This one is totally in the bag in a few months.

101. Become and Auntie (strictly speaking out of my control but god-darn it, it would make my 1001 days amazing!)

Woop Woop. Callum and his wife Selena are expecting a baby! I'm beyond excited, as are they. Hurrah! Back in Victorian (or possibly earlier) pregnant women were given an "expectancy glass" -basically like a small sherry glass- which read "may the launch of the little ship proceed well" so Selena, may the launch of the little ship proceed well.

So after all that great success here are somethings I have no idea what I'm going to do to complete

13. Finish my GirlGuiding Adult Leader Qualification

I have exactly one thing to complete. One. An eeny weeny tiny clause. First Aid. The problem is no one responds to my emails (to be fair, I have also given up chasing this because of the next point) and I have no free time to do the course. I really need a free day on the weekend. I have the kids at the weekend- Chris works. I'm totally using up all my babysitting time with relatives between hen nights, London trips and what not that asking for another day is not fair. Plus, I actually quite like spending time with my children (sometimes).

21. Get the front and back garden looking like a "garden" and keep it that way!

Time, I need more TIME. We're tackling it a bit at a time ask me again in October. Maybe.

32. Attend an Olympic or Paralympic event.

I had decided to bid for a set of tickets. Just one and leave it to fate. Then right before the deadline mum got ill and I forgot. Clean didn't remember to do it. I still have a plan...but you know how me and planning is.

44. Try out a new recipe once a month

This is not working out. I need to really get a plan together on this one. Suggestions anyone?

45. Teach Christopher one of those recipes every three months

Yeah, see if 44 fails, 45 is a goner.

96. Visit Melanie, Dan and the kids in Leeds

I am determined to do this. We had planned to go in June... now it might be October. Time.

As far as my progress goes I'm quite pleased by how many things I've wanted to do have been done. Things I would have thought about and never actually got around to doing. Back in three weeks, hopefully with some more successes.

Hi, glad you found us

Welcome to our blog. It has a lot about the kids, occasional Crafting and a healthy dose of Chaos.

family_260

I'm Clair, I'm the mama. I spend more time than I'd really like at "work" and not nearly enough time jumping in muddy puddles with the girls, sewing, reading or in my bed. It's a tough life being a mum but it's the best life in the world

Charlotte is the eldest. With a memory that will come back to haunt anyone making rash promises, she reads voraciously, loves to draw and write with her mama's love of stationary. She relishes being a Brownie and is capable of anything she sets her mind on!

Lexie might be in the middle but she doesn't let that hold her back from being in the lead. She is confident and happy with a way of worming her way into your heart. Never happier than when singing and dancing or chatting she is never one to miss a chance to have an adventure however big or small.

Minnie need only crack that smile or roll her eyes and you'll be helpless to do as she asks. My little girl with an equal love of princesses and cars, who will happilyrace her cars around her dolls house and wear her Tinkerbell nightie to bed under her Lightning McQueen duvet. Determined and delightful in equal measure.

Christopher is the Daddy and the glue who keeps this ship afloat on a day to day basis. A man who is happy to answer the question "What do you do?" with "I'm a dad" he deserves the kudos for everything from having clean underwear, packed lunches, functioning plumbing, paid bills and the perfect ballet bun - and pretty much anything inbetween.

We'rejust an ordinary family figuring out how to get through one day at a time. Perhaps with a little more self created chaos than necessary
