This month I had no idea what I'd be making for my "craft" project, as always something presented itself.
In the last month mum has been staying at the hospice and as part of her treatment she gets her medication via a pump that is about the size of your average paperback (ish). The hospice had handy little bags to carry them in but they had only little straps and mum had two, leaving her with no hands to carry anything else (think about how you would go to the loo while holding something that you can't put down in either hand, or open a door and you see the problem!). I see a challenge...
I was pretty sure I could come up with some sort of bag that could carry two pumps and give her the requested shoulder strap... all it took was around half a yard of fabric, an 2 inch section of velcro, a piece of fleece and a sewing machine.
I give you prototype 1:

It worked! But it had a few flaws- i didn't factor in the depth for the two being back to back and if I'd made the strap a little longer she could wear it across her body which we discovered would be even better.
I give you prototype 2:

There are still a few improvements that I can make- making the length adjustable (like a rucksack or bra strap), longer flaps to help keep the tubes tucked away a small pocket on the outside to store a phone/ glasses/ pen etc would also be handy, a wider strap to spread the weight, a headphone opening... I'm not planning to make a further bag because mum doesn't need it but I will probably redesign it and make half a dozen for the hospice to use for other patients.
And making these gives me something practical to do!
If I get there with a final design I'll be sure to share it.
